Phase 3: Change the narrative

The expertise of people with lived experience of poverty influencing their communities, professional practices and government policies.

ATD Fourth World’s programs change the narrative on poverty by bringing a new narrator: people who have first-hand experience of poverty. Highlighting and developing their capabilities and expertise affects the participants themselves, their families, the immediate community, and the social practitioners who interact with families facing the most difficulties. A new perception about poverty is developed by merging knowledge from the varied experiences of program participants from different parts of society. This process frees all participants from misconceptions and stereotypes. After our training and advocacy programs, influential and powerful people can better base their decisions and ideas on the realities faced by those who struggle the most as well as on their solutions.
