Finding solutions for people most affected by poverty

Finding solutions for people most affected by poverty

Dear Friends,

Every four to five years, an International Leadership Team for ATD Fourth World Movement is nominated by a group of people with very different social and economic backgrounds. They come from different countries, speak different languages, but all have in common a journey of involvement with ATD Fourth World.

This year, 22 people from 11 countries, including three people from the United States, embarked on this adventure together, despite the challenges of life and hardships in the context of a global pandemic.

They worked intensively for more than six months, looking at the aspirations and hopes of people living in persistent poverty around the world, the strengths and the weaknesses of our organization, and the main trends and evolutions in our world. They explored and discerned who could lead ATD Fourth World to meet the challenges of our time. Through this work the group named a team of three people - Chantal Consolini-Thiébaud, Bruno Dabout and Martin Kalisa - to continue the remarkable work of the previous team. The group also suggested three priorities for the new International Leadership Team’s actions:

  1. Join the efforts of young people

  2. Think and act together with the people who have the most difficult lives wherever the climate crisis is exacerbating the ongoing emergency of persistent poverty

  3. Strengthen the capacity of ATD Fourth World members to be involved and active over the long term

October 17, the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, is usually the official day for this leadership transition between the outgoing and incoming teams. During her speech at the United Nations on the last day of her mandate, Isabelle Pypaert-Perrin, now former Director General of ATD Fourth World, shared what she has heard families living in a polluted place says: “We won’t leave until we have found a solution for those of us who are the most tired.”

Isabelle, Martine, Álvaro and Bruno - thank you so much for your leadership and dedication. We are grateful that we will continue working with you in other capacities.

Chantal, Bruno and Martin - welcome! We will continue together until solutions are found for those who are the most affected by poverty.

Yours,

Guillaume Charvon
