Archives Internship

ATD Fourth World is looking for a paid intern for its archives.

ATD Fourth World is a movement of solidarity and action in collaboration with people around the world who experience extreme exclusion. ATD Fourth World works to overcome the injustices of persistent poverty and social exclusion by bringing together people from all walks of life, learning from people who face poverty every day, running family and community projects, doing participatory research, and advocating internationally on poverty and human rights issues at the UN and with other international institutions.

ATD Fourth World's archives preserve its work and ensure its history does not get lost. Even more importantly, the archives secure the evidence of suffering, courage, resistance, and intelligence of people who live in extreme poverty, and those who are dedicated to being by their side.

The International Joseph Wresinski Archives and Research Center in France supports the ATD Fourth World teams in collecting and preserving this evidence. The result is a unique heritage consisting of more than 60 years of writings (2.1 linear kilometers), millions of photos, audio recordings, films and works of art. Collected, classified and preserved at the center, using state of the art methods, these archives are the missing sources of a history of the denial of poverty and the struggles to eradicate it.

The ATD Fourth World USA archives are located in Chicago, IL (3112 N California Avenue), in the Avondale neighborhood. The archives consist of the files created by the USA branch since 1964 and are being processed for final archiving. The Chicago office works closely with the international archives team.

ATD Fourth World USA is looking for help to prepare the digitizing of its photo negative collection. The position is a great part-time opportunity for a student, preferably someone who studies archives sciences.
